TMD Martial Arts

A Place to Grow. A Place to Belong.

TMD's Youth Program gives young people in Richmond a safe, supportive environment to build confidence, make friends, and develop real martial arts skills — all while learning what it means to be part of a team.

Experienced Coaches Who Know Teenagers

The teenage years are a pivotal time. Young people are figuring out who they are, where they fit in, and what they're capable of. Martial arts gives them a powerful answer to all three.

At TMD, our Youth Program is built around one core belief: every young person has more potential than they realize. Our job is to help them find it — through structured training, genuine encouragement, and a community that takes them seriously.

Youth MMA Belt System

The Youth MMA program uses a performance-based belt system centered on live application. Students progress by demonstrating proficiency in three core disciplines:

  • Striking — clean technique, defensive awareness, and composure on the feet

  • Wrestling — takedowns, takedown defence, and control in transitions

  • Grappling — positional control, escapes, and submissions on the ground

Promotions are earned during controlled sparring appropriate for each belt level. Coaches evaluate students continuously in regular training, so a promotion reflects months of consistent performance, not a single good day in front of a panel.

Coaches also watch what happens between rounds: how a student handles a tough session, treats newer classmates, and responds to correction. Technical skill earns the belt — character keeps it meaningful.

BACKED BY RESEARCH

more confidence, earned on the mat

96%

reported improved self-confidence and self-esteem through their training. In published research on traditional martial arts schools, students say their teenage years chipped away at their confidence - consistent training built it back for them.

The TMD Youth Belt Journey

At TMD, a belt is never given — it's earned. Each level in our Youth Program represents real, demonstrated skill and the character to match: discipline in training, respect on and off the mat, and the perseverance to keep showing up. By the time students reach these levels, they've built something no one can take away from them.

Black Belt White Stripe

The first step into the black belt ranks. Fundamentals are mastered, and training shifts from learning techniques to refining them — a new beginning at a higher level.

Black Belt Gold Stripe

The bridge to mastery. Gold stripe students sharpen their precision and step into leadership, guiding junior students while preparing for the final test.

Black Belt

Earned through years of consistent training, skill, and maturity. Not the finish line — the point where the real journey begins.

Martial Arts Beyond the Belt

From time to time, we introduce students to weapons training and stunt work — disciplines that broaden their martial arts experience beyond striking, wrestling, and grappling. These sessions build coordination, body control, and spatial awareness in ways empty-hand training alone can't, and they're a favourite among students who love the performance side of martial arts.

These experiences are purely enrichment. They are not part of the promotion requirements, belt progression at TMD is earned entirely through demonstrated skill in live application. Weapons and stunt sessions are simply an opportunity for students to explore new dimensions of the arts, stay curious, and have fun doing it.

As with everything at TMD, safety comes first: all sessions are closely supervised, use training-appropriate equipment, and are taught progressively so every student participates at a level they're comfortable with.

"Both our kids joined TMD two years ago with no interest in marital arts whatsoever. But within the first couple of weeks, they were hooked. Our kids learn important life lessons and not just marital arts. We've noticed a great deal of change with them in a positive way. We love TMD and we love the community that's built around it. We would recommend them to anyone and everyone :)"

"Master Arneil, Ms. Cat, and the rest of the TMD team deserve every 5-star review they receive here. My daughters have been attending for about 8 months now and both of them enjoy their time in the dojo. Master Arneil has a gentle way with young students that simultaneously commands respect, and the students really respond well to him. In fact, my older daughter had tried another dojo before TMD, but did not like it. Master Arneil truly embodies the poise and integrity that the discipline is all about and makes a point to emphasis that his students carry these aspects of their training into their daily lives and relationships. I recommend this place to friends whenever I get a chance."
